The Misunderstood Role of Cardiovascular Training

While Cardiovascular Training has obvious science-supported benefits for human health and performance most athletes tend to avoid the boredom and 'suck' of 'chronic cardio' in favor of HIIT and other higher intensity, shorter duration forms of physical activity. It has even been suggested (sometimes aggressively in certain communities) that substituting HIIT training for cardio will yield all the benefits without the boredom, burnout and time investment of cardiovascular training.

The Search for Shortcuts

Once again, these suggestions are another example of how we humans are looking for convenience and shortcuts where there are none. We have even convinced ourselves 'chronic cardio' is not necessary and some even suggest 'chronic cardio' is 'bad' pointing to athletes who have collapsed and died while doing cardiovascular exercise. Jim Fixx, author of "The Complete Book of Running" is one of the most famous examples, collapsing and dying of a heart attack in middle age.

Is Cardiovascular Training ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’?

So, what is the deal? Is cardiovascular training 'good' or 'bad'? Both camps point to the 'science' that meets their confirmational bias. The answer is found in the context of 'The Science'. You see the body of science on training, whether it is Cardio, HIIT, Tabata, Aerobics etc., is based upon a physiology which utilizes primarily carbohydrate metabolism for a large amount of it's energy. This begs the question:

Are the issues associated with 'Chronic Cardio' really due to the cardiovascular training or the fact that massive amounts of SUGAR are required to fuel large volumes of exercise?

Limitations of Cardiovascular Training on a Carb-Based Physiology

Cardiovascular exercise has well-documented angiogenesis benefits, however, on a conventional carbohydrate based food intake these benefits are limited by:

The circulatory system inflammation caused by the oxidative stress of metabolizing lots of glucose (carbs/sugars)
The lack of nutrition in concentrated forms of carbohydrates
The impairment of delivery and metabolism of LDL Cholesterol Lipoproteins, and other nutritional building blocks to skeletal muscle cells
